Epic Games' war with Apple opens up new front in Europe
Last month the European Union charged Apple with obstructing purchases outside its App Store, something the iPhone maker is supposed to support as part of the sweeping Digital Markets Act (DMA) regulations.
Today, Epic Games provided details about what some of those obstructions might be. Epic said in a series of tweets that Apple twice rejected documents for the Fortnite maker’s store, which it plans to launch in the next couple of months, because its buttons were too similar to Apple’s. Epic said the reason for the similarity was to “build a store that mobile users can easily understand,” and called the moves “arbitrary, obstructive, and in violation of the DMA”.
Having its own game store would allow Epic to profit from in-app purchases without Apple taking a cut.
1/3 Apple has rejected our Epic Games Store notarization submission twice now, claiming the design and position of Epic’s “Install” button is too similar to Apple's "Get" button and that our "In-app purchases" label is too similar to the App Store's "In-App Purchases" label.
