Airlines are freaking out over a rise in GPS spoofing
A new report in The Wall Street Journal highlights a growing threat to airline safety—the alarming increase of GPS “spoofing.”
GPS receivers on planes and other vehicles can be disrupted with fake data transmitted on the same frequencies as the global positioning system, leading to incorrect altitude readings, altered flight paths or false collision alarms in the cockpit.
The rise of drone warfare in the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East have resulted in military forces deploying powerful radio countermeasures to disrupt navigation systems for drones and other threats, but civilian airlines can be affected as they fly near the spoofed signals.
