Alphabet’s drone delivery startup, Wing, expands service to the Bay Area
Move over Waymo — another one of Alphabet’s “Other Bets” is expanding. Drone delivery company Wing said Monday it’s bringing its “ultra-fast residential drone delivery service” to the Bay Area, where autonomous ride-hailing service Waymo also has a sizable presence.
Wing, like e-commerce giant Amazon, is trying to crack last-mile delivery. It currently operates in limited areas of Atlanta, Charlotte, Houston, and Dallas-Fort Worth, and says it has completed more than 750,000 deliveries across service areas covering more than 2 million people. Users can get drone delivery in eligible apps like Walmart and DoorDash, as well as Wing’s own marketplace.
Alphabet recently tied its CEO’s pay, in part, to how much businesses like Wing increase in value, which might help explain the push to expand.
