EU could fine Apple nearly $40B for obstructing purchases outside the App Store
The EU has charged Apple with violating the Digital Markets Act, regulations which require the iPhone maker to allow app creators the option to direct users outside the company’s App Store to make purchases.
That makes Apple the first company charged with violating those rules, and fines levied by regulators could cost the company 10 percent of its annual global revenue, which would amount to around $38 billion dollars based on 2023 numbers.
EU authorities allege that Apple isn’t allowing app makers to provide pricing information within its apps or to freely communicate about offers outside the App Store. Apple said the changes it’s made to its App Store comply with the law. Apple has a chance to respond to the findings before a final ruling in March 2025.
