EV sales hit record market share last month, thanks to Tesla, Volkswagen, and Honda
A record 9.1% of new vehicles sold in the US in January were electric, according to new data from Cox Automotive, up from 7.4% the same month last year.
The five top-selling models were the Tesla Model Y, Model 3, Volkswagen ID.4, Tesla Cybertruck, and Honda Prologue. Combined, they made up 54% of total EV sales last month.
This is good news for the electric vehicle industry, which has faced uncertainty regarding its important $7,500 federal electric vehicle tax credit under the Trump administration. (Of course, fear that the credit could disappear might also be driving sales.) While Tesla remains at the top of the heap, other data sources have reported that its January sales have declined around the world from a year earlier. Cox publishes EV sales by brand on a quarterly basis.
