Lucid soars as it gets big Uber investment to launch US robotaxi service next year
Uber said Thursday that it’s making “multi-hundred-million dollar investments” in both autonomous driving company Nuro and EV company Lucid as part of a plan to launch its own robotaxi service in an unnamed “major US city” next year.
Lucid is trading up 45% premarket on the news, while Uber is up about 1%. Uber’s investment in Lucid is $300 million and its investment in Nuro is “significantly more than that,” The Verge reports.
Uber said it aims to deploy 20,000 Lucid vehicles equipped with Nuro’s autonomous driving technology in “dozens of markets around the world” over the next six years.
Earlier this week, Uber said it was partnering with Chinese tech company Baidu to deploy robotaxis in global markets. Google’s Waymo, and to a lesser extent Tesla, already operate robotaxi services in the US.
