Trump says 25% tariff will apply to Apple, Samsung, and other manufacturers, and will start at the end of June

During a White House appearance Friday afternoon, President Trump clarified earlier comments he made about a 25% tariff on iPhones to say that the tariff would also apply to other phone makers, including South Korea’s Samsung, that are sold in the US but not made here.

“Otherwise it wouldn’t be fair,” he said. The president also stated that the tariffs, meant to force companies to move production to the US, would begin at the “end of June.”

As of Q4 2024, Apple had the largest smartphone market share in the US, with 65% of shipments, according to Counterpoint Research. Samsung was second with 18%, followed by Lenovo at 10%.
