Zuckerberg to run AI team like a startup “unencumbered by the bureaucracy” of Meta
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg wants to run his AI “superintelligence” team like a startup, the Financial Times reports. His goal for the unit, which includes top AI talent poached from competitors like OpenAI and Apple, is to be “unencumbered by the bureaucracy” at its parent company, according to the FT, citing people familiar with his thinking.
To do so, Zuckerberg has set the team up in a separate, isolated workspace at its Menlo Park HQ and has kept the lab’s work, vision, and budget secret from the rest of the company.
It’s a familiar message from Zuckerberg. He’s also said he wants Meta, which currently has a market cap of about $1.8 trillion and more than 70,000 employees, to run more like a startup. Back in 2023, he told his workforce that he would like the company to “return to a scrappier culture overall where we’re a lot leaner and doing things more efficiently.”
Perhaps in his a bid to reach AGI and become an “AI leader,” he’s realized that goal is easier to achieve without including the rest of his giant company.
Analysts expect Meta to post its slowest profit growth in two years when it reports earnings after the bell today.
