OpenAI is bringing in 40x the annual revenue of Elon Musk’s newcomer xAI, which is trying to compete with the ChatGPT maker. xAI has told investors it’s on track to surpass $100 million annually (most of which is coming from Musk’s other companies), while OpenAI is bringing in $4 billion this year (which notably is not enough to cover its substantial costs). The Wall Street Journal reports how Musk is hoping data from X and Tesla, a stand-alone consumer app like ChatGPT, and breakneck construction speeds will help close the divide.
