Steven Spielberg has officially become an EGOT
After scooping his first Grammy last night, the “Jaws” director joined an exclusive group of artists who have won across all four major US entertainment awards.
Sunday night’s Grammy Awards saw Bad Bunny and “KPop Demon Hunters” make history with their respective award wins (and Cher almost rewrite history as she announced Record of the Year).
But while the ceremony was an evening of many firsts, it also marked a very important fourth for one esteemed artist in particular.
As the documentary “Music by John Williams” scooped the prize for Best Music Film, the movie’s producer, Steven Spielberg, officially won his first Grammy award — making him the 22nd artist in history to have received an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony, thereby achieving “EGOT” status.
Being part of the illustrious club is often referred to the “grand slam” of the entertainment industry, requiring top-level mastery across film, TV, music, and theater. For Spielberg, yesterday’s win was the final piece of the EGOT puzzle, having already had 12 Emmys, three Oscars, and one Tony award to his name... though attaining EGOT status might not even be the highest-grossing director of all time’s greatest accolade.
Spielberg has joined the likes of contemporary stars John Legend and Elton John — as well as hallowed Hollywood icons like Audrey Hepburn, the only person to complete the full set of awards posthumously, some 40 years after her first win — in the elite list, following on from songwriting duo Justin Paul and Benj Pasek’s shared induction back in 2024.
Alter EGOT
There are only 22 people in history to have become an EGOT by winning the competitive awards; however, there are six other artists to have obtained all four trophies through honorary lifetime achievement awards, per The Guardian, including James Earl Jones, Liza Minnelli, and Barbra Streisand.
