D-Wave Quantum gains as Swiss Quantum Technology agrees to deploy one of its computers for 10 million euros
D-Wave Quantum is trading higher on Wednesday after the quantum computing firm announced that Swiss Quantum Technology SA has agreed to deploy its Advantage2 system in Europe, which “represents a €10M commitment from SQT, with an option to purchase the system.”
D-Wave’s prototype for this system produced its “quantum supremacy” result, where it was able to determine what types of magnetic materials could make good sensors and how to fine-tine those sensors, a task that would be energy and time prohibitive for a classical supercomputer.
Of note: this continues a trend that has seen D-Wave’s business enjoy more traction outside the US. CEO Dr. Alan Baratz has said that one challenge the company faces, “frankly, is that the US government just hasn’t been interested” in its annealing-centric quantum computing approach, and prefers gate-based models.
D-Wave has sold a quantum computing system to the Jülich Supercomputing Center, based in Germany, which fueled a huge jump in first-quarter revenues.
