Trump gives TikTok a 75-day extension
On his first day in office, President Trump issued an executive order delaying the so-called TikTok ban by 75 days. The short-form-video app temporarily went dark this weekend ahead of the ban, but resumed hours later after Trump assured the company that neither it nor the tech companies that host and distribute the app would face consequences for doing so. The executive order is meant to give the administration time “to pursue a resolution that protects national security while saving a platform used by 170 million Americans” — likely one that involves selling TikTok’s US operations to an American buyer.
So far, the stocks of social-media competitors Snap, Alphabet, and Meta are not all that affected by the news. The CEOs of the latter two were in attendance at Trump’s inauguration yesterday.
