Baidu is making big moves
It’s been a big week for Baidu, which is currently trading up 3% in the premarket. Some recent news:
It turns out both Baidu and Alibaba are working with Apple to help bring AI features to the iPhone in China, though Bloomberg reports Baidu will be more of a “secondary partner.”
Baidu will offer its chatbot, Ernie, for free to individual users.
Now the company says it will make its latest AI model open-sourced.
Many of these moves are in response to DeepSeek — a free and open-sourced model — and its splashy entrance into the AI space last month. (OpenAI has also been pushed to offer free and newer models to contend with DeepSeek.)
Though early on the AI scene, Ernie’s large language model has lagged its competitors in adoption. These recent changes should help change that.
