Google’s AI plans are a shot across the bow of the travel-planning industry
Google and OpenAI both showed off what appear to be impressive AI voice assistants during rival events this week, but Google may have a leg up when it comes to managing your life given how well it knows you already.
Google claimed its Gemini model can plan your entire vacation in seconds.
Since Google has access to your calendar and Gmail, Gemini can seemingly pull your flight and hotel bookings and build a play-by-play customized itinerary, factoring in things like distance from your hotel and activity preference. Tell it you like art and fish, and the company said your itinerary will include highly-rated seafood restaurants and exhibitions nearby, plus time to freshen up between sightseeing.
If the tool proves to be as sophisticated as it appeared in the demo, it could be a blow to travel sites like Tripadvisor and Yelp, the latter of which has had beef with Google for years, and with which it has regularly been tied up in litigation.
