400 million people now use OpenAI’s products every week, OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap told CNBC. That’s a jump of 33% in just over two months; the tech company said it had 300 million in early December. OpenAI said since last fall it’s doubled the number of paying enterprise users to 2 million.

That rapid growth comes despite plenty of disruptive events over the past month, including the emergence of powerful new DeepSeek models (which resulted in a historic loss for Nvidia shares) and a $97.4 billion offer from a group of investors led by Elon Musk to buy OpenAI’s nonprofit arm.

This year, OpenAI has its sights set on 1 billion users, a lofty goal that would put it in league with platforms like TikTok.

Judge blocks Pentagon’s move to blacklist Anthropic

A federal judge in Northern California has granted a preliminary injunction blocking the Pentagon from labeling Anthropic as a national security supply chain risk.

The ruling temporarily prevents the Defense Department from restricting the AI company’s access to federal contracts amid a dispute over its refusal to allow certain military and surveillance uses of its technology. The designation could also have shifted lucrative government work toward competitors, including OpenAI.

Earlier this month, Anthropic, the company behind Claude, sued 17 federal agencies and their heads, alleging the government exceeded its statutory authority.
