Tesla surges as Musk boasts about video appearing to show driverless robotaxi in Austin
Tesla is trading up more than 5% on tweets that suggest its long-awaited robotaxi launch is imminent — and on time.
Today, the official Tesla X account posted emoji of a robot and a taxi. When users asked the company for a launch date, it posted pictures of dried dates.

The company also reposted a video taken by user @SawyerMerritt, who posted, “First ever Tesla Model Y robotaxi with no-one in the drivers seat spotted testing on public roads in Austin, Texas!”
This is the same car you can currently buy btw https://t.co/OBoWBuD2AR

It’s not clear if the car is shepherding any passengers or if it is actually a first, but CEO Elon Musk also retweeted the same account with his own commentary:
These are unmodified Tesla cars coming straight from the factory, meaning that every Tesla coming out of our factories is capable of unsupervised self-driving! https://t.co/n94ln0Uas6

Last month, Musk said that the robotaxis had finally begun testing without drivers. The last we knew, Tesla was supposed to launch them this month with a circumscribed, invite-only version of the program with 10 to 20 cars.
