The steady reinvention of cable marches on as Max tests 24/7 live channels
Like a monthly subscription phoenix, cable just keeps rising out of its own ashes.
Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max is testing several always-on channels broadcasting its original series, documentaries, and films to subscribers.
The channels, like HBO Comedy, are themed and mirror live cable channels. Eventually they may be personalized to individual subscriber preferences.
Early analysis held that FAST platforms like the Roku Channel, Pluto TV, and Tubi became popular with users because the F in FAST stands for “free.” But with streamers racing to copy the model (Disney Plus, Amazon Prime Video, Paramount Plus, and Peacock also have curated channels), there may be more option fatigue than previously thought.
