Reported crackdown on China’s access to US chip equipment weighs on semiconductor stocks

Lam Research, KLA Corp, and Applied Materials are the biggest decliners in the VanEck Semiconductor ETF on the heels of a report from The Wall Street Journal that the Commerce Department is looking at canceling waivers that allow global chip companies like Samsung, SK Hynix, and TSMC to easily send American equipment to China.

The change under consideration would require companies to apply for a separate license every time they wanted to send equipment to China, ending the blanket waiver currently in place.

The aforementioned firms suffering the most in the wake of this news are all chip equipment makers.
