Google’s Waymo to open to public in five new US cities in 2026
Waymo is aiming to pull further ahead of Tesla, which currently has service in only two markets.
Google’s Waymo announced today that its autonomous robotaxi service will be available to the public in five new US cities — Miami, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and Orlando — beginning next year. It’s beginning operations without a driver (or passengers who aren’t employees) in Miami and the other cities in the “coming weeks.”
Waymo’s service is currently operating in five markets — the Bay Area, Austin, Phoenix, Los Angeles, and Atlanta — with a total of 12 others in the pipeline for expansion.
By contrast, Tesla is currently operational as an autonomous service only in Austin, and even there, it’s invite-only and still has a safety monitor sitting in the passenger’s seat. Tesla’s Bay Area service has an employee in the driver’s seat using supervised self-driving technology.
On its last earnings call, Tesla said it would be in 8 to 10 cities by the end of the year. As of November, Tesla has confirmed five cities where it intends to expand in the “coming months”: Las Vegas, Phoenix, Dallas, Houston, and Miami.
