Human safety monitor had to intervene during an autonomous Tesla robotaxi ride
For Tesla’s autonomous ride-hailing service that launched this weekend in Austin, there’s been a notable asterisk: the robotaxi features a human “safety monitor” sitting in the front passenger seat. The reason for the person’s presence just became clear, in a video shared by Tesla blog Teslarati.
The video, taken by Tesla investor and YouTuber Dave Lee — one of the roughly 20 people selected to try the service — shows the safety monitor pressing a button on-screen to stop the Tesla in its lane. A UPS truck ahead of the robotaxi appears to be attempting to reverse and parallel park in the same spot the robotaxi is trying to enter to drop off Lee. The robotaxi, it seems, didn’t realize the truck was going backwards, but the human did.

CEO Elon Musk has staked the future of his company on autonomy, so investors are closely watching whether its “autonomous” vehicles can truly drive themselves.
