Report: Apple may raise iPhone prices because of tariffs while never saying it’s because of tariffs
Apple is considering raising prices on its updated fall lineup of iPhones to contend with tariffs, but doesn’t plan to publicly blame tariffs, The Wall Street Journal reports.
“The company is determined to avoid any scenario in which it appears to attribute price increases to U.S. tariffs on goods from China, where most Apple devices are assembled,” WSJ wrote, citing “people familiar with the matter.”
The US and China, of course, agreed Monday to pause their mutually sky-high tariff rates for 90 days. Meanwhile, companies like Apple are set to face sector-specific tariffs that have yet to be fleshed out.
Perhaps Apple has learned something from Amazon, which got into a kerfuffle with the Trump administration after it was reported that the e-commerce giant was considering displaying tariff costs next to prices on its Temu competitor, Amazon Haul. The White House called the idea a “hostile and political act” and the company quickly backtracked.
