Uber invents the bus. Again.
Every few years a tech company invents “the bus.” Today, at its annual product event, Uber announced Route Share, a feature that “offers pickups every 20 minutes along busy corridors during weekday commute hours,” much like a bus. It costs 50% less than UberX and includes up to two co-riders, which is still not as cheap as a bus but does have fewer people on it.
This is not even the first time Uber has invented the bus.
Students of history will remember UberX Share, which relaunched in 2022 and saves riders a mere 20% for sharing their Uber with a co-rider traveling in a similar route. Others might remember exactly one year ago when Uber announced Uber Shuttle, a service that “lets you reserve a seat on a local shuttle service, along with others heading to the same destination, all for a fraction of the price of an UberX.”
I do, because I made the exact same bus joke exactly a year ago.
