Copper futures hit a record high on tariff jitters
Copper futures hit a record high, notching above $5.22 per pound Tuesday as tariff jitters send prices soaring.
The rally also follows a Bloomberg report that US mining heavyweight Glencore paused copper shipments from its Altonorte smelter due to furnace issues.
Meanwhile, US copper futures have been outpacing London Metal Exchange prices since January, with the gap stretching even more after President Trump launched a probe into potential copper tariffs last month. Earlier this month, gold also hit fresh highs, crossing $3,000 an ounce for the first time.
