Alibaba is down more than 10% after Trump threatens additional 50% tariffs on China
Today President Donald Trump threatened to impose additional 50% tariffs on China on top of last week’s reciprocal tariffs, after Beijing said it would respond to the US’s 34% reciprocal tariffs in kind.
An escalating trade war with the US is bad news on multiple fronts for Chinese e-commerce and internet company Alibaba, which was already reeling from the end of the de minimis exemption. Tariffs can reduce overseas demand for its e-commerce goods, eat into advertising revenue, and drive up the cost of tech.
